River Lodge Robin's Bay, Jamaica

Trip report by Cheryl Thomas

In the 70's Robins Bay was known as Strawberry Fields and was frequented by the Rolling Stones and others. When I went, I stayed at River Lodge which is the perfect location for a couple who wants total rest, relaxation, and privacy. It is built around the ruins of a 17th century restored Spanish Fort. It's a very pretty and unspoiled area.

Jah B's Guesthouse in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica Getting There

Jah B's Guesthouse is located above Hagley Gap. You must take a Land rover from the town of Cedar Valley. You ride on a two track, where the road goes over the top edge of a waterfall on its way up the mountain.

Blue Mountains Jamaica Trekking

Trekking to the top of the Blue Mountain begins well before dawn. Start with a fire roasted cup of Blue Mountain organic coffee, one of the most famous flavors of coffee. The trek is six miles long. Walk slow and pace yourself. The goal is to walk at night so you can reach the peak at sunrise.

Great Huts Hostel Boston Bay, Jamaica

Great Huts in Boston Bay, Jamaica has a nice vibe. You can stay in a tree house or yurt. The yurt is a communal hostel and very affordable. Private accomadations run more but are totally unique and eccentric.

Great Huts was voted the author's choice by the Lonely Planet and Best Environment by the London Observer.

Jamaican Community, Long Road

One of the most truly Jamaican travel adventures is to explore the Long Road community where Zion Country Eco Beach Cabins are located.

Long Road is a small rural community full of interesting shops, schools, bars, and most of all the local people. To gain this unique experience all you need to do is walk out the the gate of Zion Country.

Making Bammy

There is a traditional cassava bread called bammy that is made and sold in communities. This tradition is being resurrected after almost dying out when wheat and white bread was introduced to the island. This threatened the livelihood of cassava farmers. You can read this story and attempts to support bammy's comeback.

Henry's Guesthouse

In the Long Road Community, you might consider going to Henry's Guesthouse (everyone calls it Mrs. Lange's) where two rooms are for rent with shared bathroom and kitchenette. It could be a great choice for those who might not be able to tolerate the stairs of Zion Country. It is located two doors down from Zion Country on a cliff above Manchioneal Bay, overlooking where manatee live.
